The surroundings and the island

On Texel you can find extensive beaches, nature reserves and bike and walking paths where you may encounter no one for hours. And yet everything is close. Riding schools, a golf track, the airport where you can take a flight or do a tandem jump, the busy fishing harbour or the Wadden area that’s always in motion... Texel is not only in the summer a nice place to stay. In the spring and in winter the island has a unique charm. Especially in the winter, when snow appears, Texel looks like a picturesque fairy tale ... In these quieter periods, the prices are reduced and you can enjoy the peace and space that Texel gives you even more. Silent villages with narrow streets and rows of monumental facades. Nature centre EcoMare with his seal shelter. Lively markets and clearance sales. The Beachcomber Museum, the Aviation Museum, the brewery, the garden where you can harvest yourself, or the subtropical swimming paradise ... Once you’re attracted to the island's charms, you usually come back. Sometimes even several times a year. Because Texel is never boring.

Cycling

Texel is ideally suited for cycling. If it’s impossible to take your own bike, cart that you can attach to a bike or child’s seat, don’t worry; there’s a bike rental at 500 meter distance.

30 km beach

You have plenty of space at Texel with an approximately 30 km long sandy beach. For years now, Texel operates eight Blue Flags on the 30 km clean sandy beaches, making it one of the top 3 cleanest beaches in the Netherlands. There are several beach entrances, where beach pavilions, among others are situated. At post 9 (near Den Hoorn) and post 28 (near De Cocksdorp), the beach pavilions are open throughout the year.

De Slufter

Really unique is the adjacent nature reserve Slufter where the North Sea still has free play. You're one with nature here during your walk. The Slufter is an ideal spot for birds, but the vegetation makes the area interesting as well. Under the influence of the salty water that often penetrates the area, there’s much sea lavender. This plant makes that the plain colors are largely in lilac color in July and August. In and around the dunes area of De Muy there are regularly spoonbills and egrets observed. There are also other species of birds that occur in the rest of the area. Access to the Slufter has been made wheelchair friendly.

Vlieland

The boat to Vlieland departs from pole 33 near the lighthouse, but only in the tourist season. The boat will leave the passengers at the sandbank in the south of Vlieland and from there, one is further transported with an old army truck. The water between Texel and Vlieland is very dangerous, because several strong currents meet there. So there was regularly a ship that came into difficulties there. The large number of strandings on the coast of Texel (72 in the period 1848 to 1860) was the motivation for the former notary of Texel to campaign for the construction of a lighthouse. This lighthouse was built in 1864 at the northern tip of Texel.
